The Mazandaran Kilims are produced in the Caspian region of Northwest Iran and represent one of the oldest traditions in Persian rug weaving. Created with natural dyed wool, these kilims are made of single pieces, hand woven separately on a narrow loom and then stitched together by hand, to attain one carpet with staggered effects. Therefore, even following the same design, no carpet is alike to one other. In addition, the tonality modulation of the single pieces and the abrash make them unique. Despite their centuries-old heritage, the Mazandaran Kilims turn to be astonishingly modern, thanks to their minimalist abstract design: their sophisticated textures, colors and patterns have been compared to contemporary artworks and their visual simplicity makes them particularly remarkable in current interior decoration.
